IEDA Governance

As a community resource, IEDA has a formal governance structure consisting of a Policy Committee and a User Committee. These committees will guide future directions of the IEDA facility, including its services, community involvement, and partnerships.   Policy Committee The IEDA Policy Committee is the primary community advisory body for activities funded under the Cooperative Agreement with the NSF. The IEDA Policy Committee provides policy-level guidance to the IEDA leadership with the intent of maximizing the effectiveness of IEDA to enhance the scientific productivity and capability of the communities served. The goal of the Policy Committee is to ensure that activities funded under the IEDA Cooperative Agreement advance the science in such a way to best serve the interests of the solid-earth and polar science communities. The committee's most important responsibility is to ensure that the needs of the university research community are met and that IEDA is responsive to those needs. During its first year of existence, the Policy Committee will work with IEDA Leadership to craft a vision statement and a strategic plan/goals for the package of activities funded under the Cooperative Agreement.  The strategic plan will be reviewed at least every two years. The IEDA Policy Committee has eight voting members. The members and chair are appointed by the Director of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in his/her role as member of  the IEDA Leadership in consultation with the NSF. Membership is balanced to represent
  • the array of scientific disciplines served by the IEDA data systems,
  • a range of colleges and universities, geographically distributed across the US,
  • researchers and academic instructors.
The committee includes non-voting representatives from NGDC/NOAA, USGS, and the NSF, an international liaison, the LDEO Director as member of the IEDA Leadership Team, and the Director and Associate Director(s) of IEDA. The Policy Committee meets twice a year (once in its first year). Members serve three-year terms. The IEDA User Committee’s primary responsibility is to evaluate usability, performance and utility of IEDA data systems, software tools, and data services, and make recommendations to increase software usability and improve scientific utility of tools and services generated under the Cooperative Agreement. The IEDA User Committee also recommends to the IEDA Leadership themes for IEDA User Workshops that are held every other year to introduce and discuss new concepts or tools for education, research, or both. These workshops include lectures by experts and hands-on lab instructions in a relaxed, active learning atmosphere among peers. The IEDA User Committee consists of 8 to 12 members of the community who actively use IEDA data products, tools, and services. Members of the IEDA User Committee are appointed by the Policy Committee based on recommendations from the Policy Committee for a 3 year term with a possible renewal for a second term. Appointments reflect the range of disciplines that use the IEDA data services, as well as a range of large and small colleges and universities with undergraduate and graduate emphases where IEDA data systems and tools systems are in use. Additional members can be appointed by the Policy Committee if gaps in expertise or discipline are identified. The chair of the IEDA User Committee is appointed by the Policy Committee.
